Cleaning Up the Environment
The reality is that the intensity of human production and the needs to feed and cloth our population will always require the use of resources. We have to be controlled in our use of these resources and the output from production of these items though because the planet has a very fragile ecosystem. The resources we use and the waste we put out can tip the balance and lead to wide spread devastation. Fortunately humans have been putting very significant effort towards being very responsible in both of these areas. Efforts are underway to clean messes from the past and to ensure our water and air stays clean. Such efforts are very intensive and very expensive though and if we continue to pump out pollutants it will hit a point where our cleanup efforts simply can’t keep up. This is why it is absolutely vital to ensure that the water and air that is discharged from our production plants and power plants are filtered on the way out. This will alleviate the need for very expensive clean up efforts. Activated carbon filter devices can achieve this goal. Activated carbon has amazing ability to absorb all types of pollutants and can help stop pollution at the source before it leaks into the environment.

Transforming Macadamia Nut Shells to Activated Carbon
Big Island Hawaii, has numerous farms which grow macadamia nuts. Heaps of macadamia nut shells are laying around which the farm owners try and dispose off by paying $5 per ton. Some farms at times burn the shells to dry the nuts. Other than this the farms have no use for the nut shells. If not disposed off, the nut shells will keep piling up and will take at least 15 long years to biodegrade. If this same waste is bought by a company at $ 10 per ton for conversion to activated carbon, the farmer owners will be only too happy.
Taking advantage of the ready availability of the main raw material for manufacture of activated carbon, Big Island Carbon LLC, which is a $20 million company, is setting up a plant on a 4 acre plot on Maluokalani Street in Big Island. Big island Carbon hopes to complete the construction of the plant in 10 months time with a work force of 100 men and be ready for production.
Once the plant is operational, the company hopes to lift 10,000 tons of these macadamia nut shells every year. This is just 40% of the available shells, so raw material should not be a problem. The company hopes to produce 1000 tons per annum of activated carbon. Activated carbon can be sold at $1.5 to$4 per pound, depending on the quality.
